For a few years, I’ve been creating molecular visualizations. I really like structural biology, and to me, it looks like art, so I decided to share my illustrations here – maybe they’ll inspire someone to create their own. Also, I’ve gathered some PyMOL’s tips and tricks for stunning structural biology images that I hope can be useful.

All illustrations are made in PyMOL. There are other tools for molecular visualizations like VMD, ChimeraX, MOE, and many others, but PyMOL is my personal preference.

Cryo-EM maps are shown as grey surfaces. The amount of detail on the surfaces (convexities and concavities) correlates with the resolution (quality) of the maps. Different modeled structures are shown as cartoons and colored in different rainbow colors. They are fit into the corresponding cryo-EM maps to reflect how well the computational models represent the experimentally determined measures. Say hello to an amyloid fibril 🪜
